Red Sox 2023 Draft pick got off to good start on mound in Salem
With the FCL and DSL leagues both coming to a close, we have seen a few names get the bump up to Low-A or High-A to continue seeing game action. Left-handed pitcher Zach Fogell was one of the names who was brought up to Low-A Salem to keep his season going.
Fogell was drafted in the 18th round of this year’s draft after finishing his college career at UConn. The 23-year-old only appeared in one game down in the FCL before the season ended and pitched a scoreless inning.
Thursday night would end up being Fogell’s debut with Salem, and he did not disappoint.
Fogell would come in to pitch the 5th and 6th innings and put up two scoreless frames. He only allowed one hit and struck out three. It was about as good as a debut as you could've asked for.
The promotion to Salem is huge for the Red Sox system that seriously lacked left-handed pitching in the lower minors. At one point this summer for an extended period of time, Nathan Landry was the only lefty reliever between Salem and Greenville. Also add in that Brendan Cellucci is the only lefty reliever on the Portland roster at the moment. Getting Fogell on his way in the system is only going to benefit the Red Sox system with their left-handed pitching depth.
