Recent Red Sox draftees give high praise to Zack Kelly while rehabbing
Red Sox right-hander Zack Kelly underwent surgery for an ulnar nerve transportation revision in his pitching elbow on May 2nd.
His season was in jeopardy due to only having a little over four months to try to get going on a rehab assignment and rejoin the major league team. He ended up ultimately accomplishing that feat and starting a rehab assignment in September that led back to Boston.
Kelly made stops in quite a few places along the road to recovery. It seems he also made quite an impact on a few new draftees to the organization on the way.
“I got to meet him at the complex.” Recent Red Sox draftee Zach Fogell said. “He came to Salem with me when we were there so that was awesome. Him and Frank German were both great guys to bounce things off of. Both guys have been to the big leagues too, so they have met the goal I am aiming to achieve right now. Being able to bounce ideas off them about how to go about my business was awesome.
Fogell continued when asked about the kind of person Kelly was to him.
“He is a great guy. The thing I found surprising especially with him, was that he was not a big ego guy. He did not have that “I’m the best” attitude and I have been there before. The first day I got there, he walked into one of our meetings and sat down and told us to come talk to him if we had any questions. That blew me away because I was not expecting anything like that from a big leaguer. Being able to see that he had that type of personality was awesome and I learned a lot from him in that couple of weeks I got to talk to him.”
It is a great thing to hear when the major leaguers on the mend are double dipping while at the complex and showing off some leadership skills.
“Zack Kelly was a really cool dude.” Recent draft pick Trennor O’Donnell said of Kelly. “I got to pick his brain on some pitch grips and things like that. It is always great to be around guys like that who have gotten to play in the big leagues already. You can pick their brain and see what they have done to get there.”
