On Friday afternoon, The Tampa Bay Rays promoted a key part of their future to the majors in Curtis Mead. The 22-year-old is ranked as the Rays' third-best prospect by MLB.com and was putting together another impressive season in the minors. Tampa Bay is hoping he can provide a spark to the offense.
In 50 games between Rookie Ball and Triple-A, the Australian native has posted a .283 batting average with 32 runs batted in. While he has only hit two home runs this season, Mead has added 17 doubles and two triples to his resume. Over the last month, he has been an on-base machine after dealing with a fractured wrist earlier in the season.
Since returning from a stint on the seven-day injured list on June 29, Mead has posted a .333 batting average in his last 127 at-bats. In that span, he has nine multi-hit games. July was by far his best month of the season as the Rays infielder displayed all the tools that have made him one of the best prospects in baseball.
As Mead adds strength, he is projected to average 20-25 home runs a year. That power will pair well with some of the Rays' core, such as Wander Franco, who is already signed to a long-term deal. Fans no longer have to dream of what an infield that includes Franco and Mead will do.
Although his MLB career is just getting going, Friday news marked an exciting day for the franchise. Mead has all the tools to make an impact in the majors, and the ability to play multiple positions. His promotion comes at the perfect time as the Rays look to get back on track after a brutal July.
