Rafael Devers: ‘right now, it’s not going our way’
The offense is spiraling and it's time for Chaim Bloom to fix the roster issues
The Red Sox were swept by the Chicago White Sox on Sunday and have now lost five straight games. In the process, the Red Sox have sole possession of last place in the American League East.
The Red Sox offense continues to struggle and the bullpen hasn’t exactly been an intimidating group in the later innings. Boston’s lineup has looked lifeless all season long and the aren’t showing any signs of life. The offense ranks 26th in baseball with 95 runs scored, 28th with 16 home runs, 22nd with 94 RBIs, 29th with 65 walks and 28th with a .279 on-base percentage.
Rafael Devers has been one of the few bright spots in the lineup. Devers, Xander Bogaerts and J.D. Martinez accounted for nine hits and both of the runs scored in the loss on Sunday. The three hitters entered the day hitting .309 with an .833 OPS. The rest of the Red Sox lineup has been putrid hitting a combined .188 average and a .528 OPS.
“Yeah, very surprised,” Devers said about the team’s offense. “I know the quality team that we have, so I know in the end everything is going to turn out and we’re going to get to our full potential. But right now, it’s not going our way. But we’re working every day to get to where we need to get.”
The Red Sox need to figure out their offensive woes and fast. As the second week of May begins to approach us, the club has major holes in the lineup.
Chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom said that he isn’t opposed to making an early season trade. He does caution that he doesn’t want to overreact and make a decision based off of panicking. Despite not wanting fans to panic, the team has dug themselves into a big hole and are 10.5 games out of first place.
“That’s real. We’ve dug ourselves a hole,” he said. “There’s no question. We haven’t played well. Panic is not going to help. We have to play better. We put ourselves in this situation. But if we’re going to get out of it, we’re going to get out of it by doing those things that we know we can do well. There’s a difference between urgency and panic. And I think we certainly need to show more urgency than we hoped we would be feeling at this point in the season. But this game isn’t going to reward panic.”
If the Red Sox are struggling as the calendar approaches June, they’re needs to be some serious criticism placed in the direction of the front office and Chaim Bloom.
