Rafael Devers belts his sixth homer of the spring against the Braves
Rafael Devers has been absolutely locked in at the plate this spring. The Red Sox All-Star third baseman entered Sunday’s spring training game with five home runs. Devers would add on to his impressive home run spring total with a three-run shot in the top of the second inning.
With two outs, Devers came to the plate with two runners on ready to face Braves starter Huascar Ynoa. Coming into that at-bat Devers was 0-for-1 to start the game. On an 0-2 count, Devers golfed a pitch from Ynoa deep over the right field wall. Devers impressive home run gave the Sox a 5-1 lead.
The 25-year-old slugger has now mashed six home runs and driven in 12 RBIs this spring. Devers continues to make the case to Red Sox ownership and the front office to offer him a contract extension.
“We haven’t talked about that but obviously this is a great place to play baseball in,” Devers said through translator Bryan Almonte a few weeks ago. “This is the Boston Red Sox. But I’m really not focused on that right now. Just focused on playing the season and see where it goes from there.”
Last season Devers had an impressive campaign earning a Silver Slugger and finishing 11th in AL MVP voting. He batted .279 with 38 home runs, 113 RBIs in 156 games.
