Prospect Report: Francis Hernandez shows promise in FCL
When it comes to Red Sox prospects, you’re probably thinking of highly-touted guys like Marcelo Mayer, Blaze Jordan, Niko Kavadas, Bryan Mata or even Miguel Bleis, but there’s another name that you should get familiar with — Francis Hernandez.
Hernandez, 20, is a right-handed pitcher who, according to scouts says can “sling it” when it comes to pitching and isn’t afraid to attack hitters.
On the season for the FCL Red Sox club, Hernandez has worked 12 games, but only recorded one start on the season. He has 40 strikeouts and has only walked 15 over 38 and a third innings this season. Hernandez owns a 9-3 record with a 4.46 ERA.
The winning record is an improvement from last season where he went 0-5 over 13 games for the DSL Boston Red Sox. The numbers over 49 and a third innings last year are roughly the same as he produced 47 strikeouts while walking 11.
Hernandez likely won’t be up in Low-A Salem anytime soon, but making progress in a years time is noteworthy. If he keeps producing good outings for the remainder of the year, then he could just make the jump to Low-A Salem to start the campaign next year.
