Portland Sea Dogs MiLB Notebook: Roman Anthony homers in return to lineup, Kristian Campbell hits .429 vs. Reading, Bryan Mata completes rehab outing
Red Sox top prospect Roman Anthony homered in the Portland Sea Dogs’ 10-5 win over Reading on Sunday. He was playing for the first time since leaving the Sea Dogs’ game Wednesday night after he was hit in the elbow by a pitch.
Anthony went 1-for-5 with three strikeouts atop Portland’s lineup on Father’s Day. The Red Sox top prospect is hitting .271/.384/.480 with six homers, 15 doubles, two triples, 19 RBI, 31 runs, 30 walks, and a .864 OPS in 49 games this season.
The Florida native also missed time in late May and early June with a rib issue. He returned from that injury on June 5 and has hit .414 with three homers, four doubles, and six RBI in the month of June.
Kristian Campbell remains hot
Kristian Campbell went 3-for-5 with a double, two RBIs, and three runs in Portland’s win.
He has a strong series versus Reading, recording hits in five of the six games he played in. Campbell went 12-for-28 (.429 AVG) with two homers, four doubles, seven RBI, and one stolen base.
“I would say just be ready to hit at all times because the stuff's a lot better than at High-A,” Campbell said to Beyond the Monster on adjusting to Double-A. “Be ready to hit because they're trying to throw strikes. They're trying to get you out, so they aren't playing around too much.
“I think that's the main thing, honestly. They aren't trying to play too much, so be ready to hit when you get in the box."
Bryan Mata completes another rehab outing
Red Sox pitcher Bryan Mata began a new rehab assignment on Sunday. He tossed two scoreless frames in his start for the Sea Dogs, allowing one hit and no walks while striking out two.
Mata has been shut down after dealing with shoulder soreness following a rehab stint with Portland at the end of May. Once he officially begins his rehab with the Sea Dogs, a new 30-day clock will begin for Mata.
The 25-year-old, who is on the Red Sox 40-man roster and is out of minor league options, has been on the injured list all season, dealing with various injuries. Once Mata becomes eligible to come off the IL, the Red Sox will have to add him to the 26-man roster, designate him for assignment, or trade him.
