Popular WooSox player misses team picture due to promotion to the Red Sox
There was one player missing from the WooSox team photo on Thursday who really wanted to be part of the moment with his teammates.
Nick Sogard missed the team photo, but for a good reason. Sogard is currently with the Boston Red Sox and will be traveling with the team to Detroit as they embark on a three-game weekend series with the Tigers on Friday night.
Sogard was recalled by Boston from Triple-A Worcester after the club placed speedy infielder David Hamilton on the 10-day injured list with a fractured index finger.
Hamilton suffered the injury attempting to bunt for a hit in the eighth inning of Wednesday night’s game against the Blue Jays.
“He did say he was actually looking forward to being in that photo,” WooSox manager Chad Tracy said before Thursday’s game against the Toledo Mud Hens. “Although I think he’s just fine with where he’s headed.”
This is Sogard’s second stint with the Red Sox this season. He was initially promoted on July 31 and then made his big league debut two days later. He would record his first major league hit in the game against the Texas Rangers on the road.
Sogard is batting .239 (11 for 46) in 12 games for the Red Sox this season. He earned the start on Thursday night, playing third base for Rafael Devers, who is nursing sore shoulders. The WooSox’ fan favorite broke up the Blue Jays starter Bowden Francis no-hitter bid, finishing the night 1-for-2 in the Sox’ 2-0 loss.
While with the Red Sox, Sogard has made nine starts at second base, two at shortstop, and one at third base.
If anyone were to ask Sogard, he would trade missing picture day for the WooSox to get a chance to be in the big leagues and playing for the Red Sox.
“I feel like he knows that he’s in that place now of like, ‘You're a reliable player,’” Tracy said. “(The Red Sox) know it, so they have a need, and he’s the one that’s going up.. So, he'll fill in very adequately, just like he did last time he went.”
