Pirates to promote former Red Sox prospect Nick Yorke
The Pirates are promoting former Red Sox prospect Nick Yorke from Triple-A Indianapolis, according to Noah Hiles of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
Pittsburgh acquired Yorke in July for right-handed pitcher Quinn Priester. Yorke is not currently on the Pirates 40-man roster and will need to add him.
Since joining the Indianapolis Indians, Yorke has torn the cover off the ball; he owns a slash line of 355/.431/.507 with two homers and 17 doubles in 40 games. The former first-round pick began the season with the Portland Sea Dogs and was eventually promoted to Triple-A Worcester. While with the WooSox, the Calif. native hit .310 with eight doubles, six homers, 19 RBI, six stolen bases, and had an .898 OPS.
“One of the first conversations I had after finding out that I was traded was with [Ben Cherington],” Yorke said in an interview with the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. “He said that they think there is more in me, that I can play multiple positions. Their plan was to start me in Triple-A, rep it out, and see how it goes. It’s kinda cool to see how a different organization views me as a defensive weapon.”
The 22-year-old infield/outfielder was selected 17th overall by the Red Sox in the 2020 MLB Draft. He’s spent the majority of his minor league career at second base but has seen time in the outfield the last year and a half.
Red Sox lose catcher Tyler Heineman to waivers
The Blue Jays claimed recently DFA’d Red Sox catcher Tyler Heineman off waivers, both teams announced.
Heineman, 33, appeared in two games for the Red Sox this season, spending the majority of the time with the WooSox. While in Worcester, he batted .252 with 11 extra-base hits, 26 RBI, and a .370 on-base percentage.
Boston designated Heineman for assignment to free up room on the 40-man roster for left-handed pitcher Zach Penrod. The southpaw made his major league debut over the weekend against the Yankees.
To make room for Heineman on their 40-man roster, the Blue Jays designated catcher Brian Serven for assignment.
