Over the last few years, Termarr Johnson has been one of the most watched players in the Pittsburgh Pirates system. The 19-year-old has impressive power and the ability to anchor a lineup for years to come. On Monday afternoon, his impact was on full display.
As the Pirates' pitching struggled to keep the Blue Jays off the board, Johnson was one of the few bright spots. The former fourth overall pick crushed two home runs, driving in three of Pittsburgh's four runs. As he left fans in awe, the Pirates got a preview of what the future holds.
Since joining the Pirates organization two years ago, Johnson has appeared in 128 games in the minors and posted a .240 batting average. He has hit 19 home runs and driven in 59 runs in that span. While those numbers may not jump off the page, Johnson showed improvement last season and drew 101 walks.
During his short time in the Pirates system, Johnson has not backed down from any challenge, which has stood out to Pirates manager Derek Shelton.
"He's not afraid, in a beautiful way," Shelton told Noah Miles of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette following Monday's game. "This kid's going to like the lights, so that's going to be a really good thing for the Pirates."
While Johnson still has plenty to prove, he is taking in everything around him at spring training. His focus has been learning as much as he can while surrounded by veterans. As long as he continues to improve, the future in Pittsburgh will be bright.
