In spring training, Jared Jones has been a bright spot for the Pittsburgh Pirates. The 22-year-old has kept hitters off balance with a fastball that can reach triple digits. While many expected him to begin the season in the minors, Jones is making a case to stick around.
Through 7.1 innings of work, the 2020 draftee has not allowed a run. Jones has struck out six batters and held opponents to a .120 batting average in that span. Even when batters have reached base, Jones has done an excellent job of working out of trouble.
Although Jones has always had swing-and-miss stuff, control has been his biggest issue in the minors. In 26 games last year, he posted a 3.85 ERA but walked 50 batters. He also struggled at times during his first stint in Triple-A, allowing nine home runs in 82 innings of work. During spring training, the former 44th overall pick has been a different pitcher.
While the fastball has always been his bread and butter, Jones has used a variety of pitches to get batters out. His slider and curveball have generated the most swings and misses. He hasn't had to rely on his fastball to be successful.
Although Jones has been one of the Pirates' best pitchers, he has competition for a rotation spot. That includes Bailey Falter, Luis Ortiz, Quinn Priester, and Roansy Contreras. Falter and Contreras are out of options and would be exposed to waivers if they aren't on the Opening Day roster.
Regardless of what the Pirates choose, Jones should make his MLB debut during the summer. Over the last few weeks, he has shown why the future in Pittsburgh is bright.
