The Red Sox and Pirates made a swap at the MLB Trade Deadline last season. The deal saw fan favorite Michael Chavis head to Pittsburgh for left-handed reliever Austin Davis.
On Monday afternoon, the Pirates designated Chavis for assignment after claiming former Yankees infielder Miguel Andújar off waivers.
The 27-year-old posted a .229 batting average with 14 homers, .654 OPS and an 80 wRC+ in 426 plate appearances over 129 games for the Pirates this year.
Chavis struggled to find consistency at the plate, he had a good April and May posting a .837 OPS. Since June 1st, Chavis saw his production dip and had a .574 OPS in 88 games since then.
Despite hitting 14 homers for the Pirates, Chavis struck out 29.6% of his plate appearances. Prior to being DFA’d, he has gone 0-for-15 in his last five games with only one walk, five strikeouts and a .063 OBP.
The former Red Sox first round pick will offer any team that claims him versatility in the field. He played first, second and third base this season. Chavis who has more than three years of MLB service time is eligible for arbitration in the offseason. He also has an option year remaining as well.
