The Phillies announced they have shutdown right-handed pitcher Noah Song with tightness in his back.
Song has reportedly undergone an MRI and is expected to be re-evaluated next week, per The Philadelphia Inquirer’s Alex Coffey.
The 25-year-old told reporters that his back tightness began gradually over the last couple of days. Song has thrown multiple bullpen sessions in the attempt to get ready for the regular season. The right-handed hurler was supposed to throw a bullpen on Friday but elected to “not push it.”
Song was taken by the Phillies in the Rule 5 draft back in December, has been transferred from active Naval duty to select reserves. This allows him to resume his professional baseball career.
Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski told reporters at the beginning of camp that Song was “worth the upside and risk.”
"If he is to make our 26-man roster, it's going to have to be in the bullpen," Dombrowski said in February at Phillies camp. "There's no way we'll be able to stretch him out to be a starting pitcher. But we have another spot. Who knows? People get hurt. We just thought it was worth the upside and risk."
