Pedro Martinez in camp with the Red Sox as a guest instructor
Pedro Martinez is back.
The Hall of Fame pitcher is at Fenway South as a guest instructor for Red Sox pitchers.
“It feels great to get back and see everybody mingling together,” said Martinez on Monday.
“We don’t have any distance. I know that that’s one of the reasons why communication between most of us was more difficult to do because a Zoom call is not the same as getting together and watching this guy together and having different viewpoints and opinions.”
The three-time Cy Young Award winner watched while Corey Kluber threw live batting practice to Masataka Yoshida and Rafael Devers.
Martinez also worked alongside Brayan Bello. The young hurler threw off flat-ground today, it’s the first time he’s thrown since being shutdown last week due to forearm tightness.
Bello reportedly felt good after throwing on Monday. The team will see how the right-hander feels on Tuesday before moving forward with his regular schedule.
Martinez worked with Bello this offseason and acknowledged the youngster is poised to take a big step in 2023.
“We saw it toward the end,” Martinez told The Boston Globe’s Julian McWilliams.
“When Bello was finally acclimated to the team and acclimated to what he needed to do on a consistent basis, he showed his improvement. He showed that he can make the transition from the minor leagues to the big leagues, and at the same time be successful.
“So what we have to do is try to guide him still because he’s young enough to be guided. It’s difficult to say that at the big level, but I feel we still have the responsibility to guide these young guys.”
The 2004 World Series champion has joined former Red Sox greats in camp. Dustin Pedroia, Luis Tiant, Dwight Evans and Jim Rice have all appeared at the Jet Blue Complex this week.
