Patriots waive quarterback, down to two on 53-man roster
The New England Patriots will waive quarterback Will Grier, per Adam Schefter.
This leaves the Patriots with Mac Jones and Bailey Zappe as the two quarterbacks on the 53-man roster.
The corresponding move, with the roster being at 52, could end up being the promotion of offensive lineman Connor McDermott.
Grier was talked about amongst fans and media possibly even starting in Week 12 against the Giants after Jones was benched in the Patriots last game, the 10-6 loss against the Colts, in Germany .
Bill Belichick has refused to name a starter this week, only fueling speculation. However, during this weeks practice Jones and Zappe were splitting first team reps.
In three preseason games with the Dallas Cowboys, Grier threw for 640 passing yards with 4 TDs/2 INTs. His QB rating was a solid 103.3.
Grier had been the emergency quarterback, but never cracked the active gameday roster.
McDermott has been promoted from the practice squad three times this season. That is the maximum a player can be bumped up before being added to the 53-man roster.
The 2-8 Patriots take on the 3-8 Giants as this game has major draft pick implications. A loss for New England could solidify their position for a top five, if not a top three draft pick.
