Patriots trade Jonnu Smith to the Falcons, re-sign two defensive players
The Patriots made a surprise trade on Monday sending tight end Jonnu Smith to the Falcons for a seventh-round pick.
The move will free up more than $4 million in cap space, while Smith re-unites with head coach Arthur Smith, who was his former offensive coordinator and position coach with the Titans.
Smith’s time in New England was underwhelming to say the least. He never produced at the level of the contract he signed in 2021. Patriots head coach Bill Belichick signed Smith to a four-year, $50 million deal in March of 2021.
In just two years with the Patriots, he managed just 55 catches for 539 yards and one touchdown.
Jonathan Jones is back
The Patriots locked up cornerback Jonathan Jones to a two-year, $20 million deal that includes $13.5 million in guaranteed money and a $7.5 million signing bonus.
The former undrafted free agent out of Auburn was one of the key free agents the Patriots needed to bring back into the fold.
Jones has played all seven of his NFL seasons in New England. He has seen time as a slot corner but he could see time at safety this coming seen, according to 98.5 The Sports Hub’s Ted Johnson.
Carl Davis is back on a one-year deal
The Patriots also brought back veteran defensive tackle Carl Davis to a one-year deal.
Davis came to New England in 2020 after the Pats signed him off the Jaguars practice squad.
Last season, Davis recorded 11 tackles, a sack, and a fumble recovery. He registered at least one tackle in all the games he played in 2022.
