Patriots hire former Giants head coach to offensive staff (report)
The Patriots are adding another experienced coach to Jerod Mayo’s offensive staff.
According to the NFL Network, the Patriots are hiring former Giants head coach Ben McAdoo to be an offensive assistant. He will work with new offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt; who was hired by the team last week.
McAdoo and Van Pelt have a history of working together, the pair worked on the same staff while with the Packers. The new Patriots offensive assistant was Green Bay’s quarterback coach from 2012-2013, Van Pelt was the running backs coach.
Both coaches have ties to Eliot Wolf, working with the front office executive in Green Bay. In addition to adding McAdoo, the team added former Packers defensive line coach Jerry Montgomery, who also worked with Wolf in Green Bay.
McAdoo was the Giants head coach beginning in 2016, leading the team to a 11-5 record. The wheels came off the following season, the Giants started 2-10 and he was subsequently fired. He drew criticism for benching Eli Manning in favor of Geno Smith.
Following his time with the Giants, McAdoo worked with the Jaguars as a quarterback coach in 2020, a consultant with the Cowboys in 2021, and the Panthers offensive coordinator in 2022.
With the hiring of McAdoo, the Patriots have two experienced coaches on the offensive side of the ball. There’s speculation that Mayo will add another veteran coach to his staff.
