Patriots fielding phone calls on Isaiah Wynn, three landing spots for the offensive tackle
The New England Patriots are reportedly shopping offensive tackle Isaiah Wynn. The former first round pick has been lining up at right tackle this preseason. According to Albert Breer of SI.com, the Patriots are taking calls on the former Georgia Bulldog.
Wynn currently comes with a $10.4 million salary, which will likely limit his suitors in a trade. The Patriots are interested in trading Wynn to free up cap space, as the team sits towards the bottom of the league in cap space.
“New England’s really tight to the cap, and my sense is they’d like to use a surplus they might have at one position or another to alleviate that and maybe pick up a draft pick or two. The one guy I know definitively that they’ve talked with other teams on is Isaiah Wynn, their first-round pick from 2018. Wynn, though, is on a $10.4 million fifth-year option, which has made it tough to move a guy who, four years after he was drafted, is still seen as a tackle/guard tweener,” wrote Breer.
What teams could make a play for Wynn?
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers could be an option. Wynn could join Shaq Mason and Tom Brady providing versatility at both guard and tackle for a team needing depth on the offensive line.
Center Ryan Jensen and left guard Aaron Stinnie to season-ending injuries. The Buccaneers could send a fourth-round pick to New England for Wynn’s services.
The Pittsburgh Steelers might be interested in adding to their o-line to help protect either rookie quarterback Kenny Pickett, Mitch Trubisky or Mason Rudolph.
The Steelers didn’t draft an offensive tackle, nor have they added a notable one via free agency. Wynn could come in and be an immediate starter for the Steelers. Could Bill Belichick squeeze two late-round draft picks for Wynn?
Another obvious landing spot is Las Vegas. Since Dave Ziegler and Josh McDaniels running things in Sin City, any Patriot player will be linked to the Raiders.
Ziegler was the Patriots’ Director of Pro Personnel when they drafted Wynn with a first-round pick in 2018. The new Raiders general manager might try and land Wynn and upgrade his team’s o-line and protect Derek Carr.
Wynn’s hefty salary will likely land the Patriots a mid-round pick from the Raiders but that’s right in the wheelhouse of Belichick.
