The New England Patriots have signed defensive end Trey Flowers, per Ian Rapaport of the NFL Network.
Flowers was a free agent this offseason and will be reuniting with New England after working out with the team yesterday.
Flowers was originally drafted in the fourth round back in 2015 by the Patriots. During his tenure he had 21 sacks, 59 quarterback hits, and five forced fumbles. through three seasons. He left New England for a big payday with the Detroit Lions signing a five-year, $90 million contract.
Unfortunately, he only managed to record 9.5 sacks and play 27 games with Detroit before being released. He latched on with the Miami Dolphins last season, only playing in four games due to a season ending foot injury.
The soon to be 30 year old has battled other injuries since he has left the Patriots. In 2019, he missed one game with a concussion, and in 2021 he was missed time between a knee and shoulder injury.
In New England, Flowers made the most of his time as he became a two time Super Bowl champion. He had 5.5 sacks in 9 playoff games with the Patriots.
His biggest sack came with 4 minutes left in the title game against the Atlanta Falcons in 2017, sacking Matt Ryan on 2nd &11 effectively knocked the Falcons out of field goal range when they were already up by eight.
The Alabama native will join an already formidable edge group that is lead by Matthew Judon. The other depth includes Josh Uche, Deatrich Wise, Keion White, Ronnie Perkins, and Anfernee Jennings. The Patriots have one more remaining roster spot as of right now.
