Patriots bench Mac Jones, fall to 2-8 in hässlich loss to Colts in Germany
Mac Jones benched again, offense continues to struggle
Mac Jones had another underwhelming performance during the Patriots 10-6 loss to the Indianapolis Colts, from Frankfurt Stadium in Germany on Sunday.
Jones was 15-of-20 with 170 yards and one interception, which came in the red zone at the Colts 1-yard line, when he under threw a pass to tight end Mike Gesicki.
The 25-year-old was benched for the Patriots last drive, in which his back up, Bailey Zappe also through an interception to ultimately end the game.
Bill Belichick was asked in his post game presser about Jones’ benching in which he replied, “I just thought it was time for a change.”
With the Patriots on a bye next week and six games back of .500, it will be interesting to see if they look to make a change at quarterback.
Demario Douglas remains one of the lone bright spots on the New England offense. He led the team with 84 receiving yards, which is also a career high and had six receptions.
The Patriots defense held the Colts to only 10 points which ties a season low when they allowed 10 to the New York Jets in Week 3 and snapped a 89-game win streak when limiting the opposing team to 10 points or less.
Linebacker Jahlani Tavai made a nice tip play on a Gardner Minshew pass early in the third quarter which was picked off by defensive back Myles Bryant, his first INT of the season.
Mac and the Patriots offense were ice cold the entire game, after scoring a field goal on their first drive, they finished with six points, one missed field goal, four punts and two turnovers. Jones was also sacked five times in the game.
New England outgained Indianapolis by 76 yards on offense, they had seven more first downs, possessed the ball for eight minutes and 50 seconds longer but lost the turnover battle 2-to-1.
Patriots players and coaches both acknowledged how good the fans in the crowd were and expressed their joy playing in front of them. Patriots owner Robert Kraft had spoke pregame about his desire to win in FrankFurt and was seen physically frustrated in the booth during the pats loss.
If the season ended today, New England would currently pick third overall in the NFL Draft this coming spring.
