Michael Wacha finally has a home for the 2023 season. The Padres and Wacha agreed to a deal that could earn the righty $24 million over four years, per The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal.
The complex deal includes both player and club options, reports Rosenthal.
Wacha remained unsigned for the entire offseason, fueling speculation as to where he would pitch for the upcoming season.
The 31-year-old pitched his only season with the Red Sox last year. He went 11-2 with a 3.32 ERA, 1.12 WHIP with 104 strikeouts over 127 1/3 innings pitched.
Boston signed Wacha to a one-year, $7 million deal in the offseason in 2021. After not being offered the qualifying offer, the Red Sox had remained in contact with Wacha during this offseason on a potential return.
Last month, Jon Heyman reported that Wacha was seeking a two-year pact. USA Today’s Bob Nightengale added to that report saying Wacha was looking for $15 million per season.
Wacha will turn 32 in July signs a deal that’ll provide him potential security over the next four seasons. He will look to earn a spot in the Padres rotation that already features Joe Musgrove, Yu Darvish, Blake Snell, Seth Lugo and Nick Martinez.
