Padres discussing right-hander Dinelson Lamet with teams, should the Red Sox be involved?
The Padres have an abundance of starting pitching and are looking to deal from that surplus. According to reports, San Diego is shopping right-hander Dinelson Lamet, per The Athletic’s Dennis Lin.
San Diego is looking to move Lamet’s $4.775 million salary. The move would help allow the Padres some financial flexibility to pursue bats for their lineup.
The Red Sox are in need like most teams for more pitching. Chris Sale and James Paxton are still weeks away from joining the club. Lamet could provide a lift to their rotation if Chaim Bloom shows interest.
I should caution Red Sox fans that Lamet has a history of injuries. That history could drive the price down for his return in a trade. Lamet had Tommy John surgery in 2018, a UCL strain in 2020, and forearm tightness last year.
Despite his injury history, the 29-year-old hurler has shown flashes of potential. During the pandemic shortened season, he finished fourth in CY Young voting. Lamet would post a 2.09 ERA over 69 innings. However his UCL injury kept him off the Padres postseason roster.
Over the course of his big league career, Lamet owns a 15-18 record, a 3.89 ERA, 403 strike outs in 310 innings. Lamet has made 56 starts in 76 career games.
The right-handed hurler is in the final year of his contract. He will also turn 30 in July. Again, given his injury past a potential return wouldn’t be huge. Lamet would be a roll of the dice for the Red Sox. But based off some of the arms they have coming off injuries, that could be said for Sale and Paxton too.
