Over the last few weeks, the Red Sox have received an unexpected spark from Pablo Reyes. He was acquired from the Athletics on May 12 as injuries piled up in the infield. Nearly a month later, the 29-year-old has been on a base machine and provided stability at second and shortstop. While his sample size is small, Reyes is making the most of his playing time.
Through the first 23 games of his Red Sox tenure, Reyes has posted a .305 batting average and driven in nine runs. He has added 18 hits to his resume, the third-highest total in a single season. The Dominican native has also shown some power with four doubles and has been hard to keep out of the lineup.
While Reyes has thrived at the plate, he has excelled defensively. Over the last five weeks, the former Athletic has turned five double plays and added 40 putouts to his resume. In that span, he has committed three errors while playing multiple positions. Reyes has played at least one inning at third, second, and short for the Red Sox. Regardless of the situation, Reyes is coming through when called upon.
Due to his play, the Red Sox will have a hard decision to make in the near future. Yu Chang and Trevor Story are getting closer to returning, which could leave Reyes as the odd man out. He has exceeded expectations, but the Red Sox’s options are limited.
Since making his Red Sox debut, Reyes has seen his stock rise. He only needs ten more RBI to tie his career high, and he has added to his highlight reel a few times. If the Red Sox send Reyes to Worcester when they need to open up a roster spot, he could serve as a depth piece in the minors.
Regardless of what the future holds, Reyes has made the most of his time in a Red Sox uniform. He has proven to be a perfect fit and has been a useful player when the infield needed a spark.
