Northeastern continues Beanpot dominance in thrilling overtime win
On Monday night, Northeastern University continued its Beanpot dominance with an overtime win over Boston University. In front of a sold-out TD Garden crowd, the Huskies and Terriers provided fans with a classic.
As the Huskies won their fifth Beanpot final in six years, they battled through adversity. They rallied from three one-goal deficits to force overtime despite landing less than 20 shots on net. In overtime, Gunnarwolfe Fontaine provided the fireworks with a game-winning goal he will never forget.
"It feels amazing," Fontaine told NESN after the victory. "When you can win with your brothers out here, there's nothing like it."
While the Huskies got timely goal-scoring, their goalie, Cameron Whitehead, put together a masterful performance. He made 30 saves and didn't allow the Terriers to build a multi-goal lead. To his teammates, such as Fontaine, Whitehead's performance came didm’t come as a shock.
"That was no surprise. We have all the faith in the world in him," Fontaine said of Whitehead. "He's a stud back there. We're lucky to have him."
Although Whitehead’s play was hard to ignore, Northeastern got balanced scoring. Matt DeMelis, Justin Hryckowian and Jack Williams found the back of the net during regulation.
In the consolation game, Boston College beat Harvard 5-0.
