Nick Sogard is making the most of his opportunities in spring training
Over the last few weeks, Red Sox fans have gotten a preview of the future with prospects still in big league camp. One player who has stood out is Nick Sogard, who has been on fire at the plate. While Sogard is expected to start the season in the minors, his play has been hard to ignore.
The 26-year-old has posted a .417 batting average through six games and driven in six runs. His power has also been on full display, as four of his five hits have gone for extra bases. While Sogard only has a small sample size, he has been one of the best hitters on the team so far in spring training.
Additionally, the former 12th-round pick has driven in six runs, which is tied with Rob Refsynder for the team lead. The only other player with more than four is Rafael Devers, who has driven in five runs. That is not bad company to be in and it shows that his hard work is paying off.
For many in the Red Soxโs organization, Sogardโs success comes as no surprise. During the 2023 campaign, he drove in a career high 47 runs. The Los Angeles native also spent the whole season in Triple-A and posted a .266 batting average. In his second Triple-A stint Sogard continued to make adjustments against advanced competition.
Regardless of where Sogard starts the season, he could be an intriguing bench option. He has hit at every level and shown in spring training what happens when he barrels up and a pitch. The talented infielder also has little left to prove in the minors, with 177 Triple-A games on his resume.
If Sogard can build on his recent success, he could get a look in the majors during the summer if an opportunity arises.
