Nick Sogard is making the most of his at-bats
At the end of last season, Nick Sogard provided a glimpse of what he could do during his first MLB call-up. The Los Angeles native posted a .273 batting average in 77 at-bats. He also provided solid defense regardless of the position. This spring, he is battling for a roster spot and making the most of his opportunities.Â
Over the last few weeks, Sogard has gotten plenty of playing time and been an on-base machine. In 12 games, the former 12th-round pick has posted a .360 batting average while driving in five runs. He has also shown some power with three extra-base hits, including one home run. Whenever the Red Sox have big days offensively, Sogard seems to be in the middle of it.Â
While Sogard’s play has stood out, it comes as no surprise to those who have watched his development. Since entering the Red Sox system, he has been reliable in the field and steady with the bat. Sogard won’t blow people away with his power, but he provides quality at-bats that usually end up with him on base.Â
That has not gone unnoticed by manager Alex Cora, who has been impressed by what he has seen from Sogard in Fort Myers.
"Red Sox officials will meet on Friday to discuss the first round of cuts from major league camp," shared Alex Speier of the Boston Globe before the Red Sox made their first cuts. "Among players fighting for the last position spots, Cora offered praise for outfielders Trayce Thompson and Nate Eaton as well as infielder Nick Sogard."
As the Red Sox finalize their roster, Sogard will be a player to watch. If he doesn't make the opening-day roster, he could be a valuable depth piece in the minors when injuries arise. Regardless of what the Red Sox decide to do, Sogard has arrived at camp ready to build on his success last year.
