Nick Sogard & Nick Yorke swung hot bats for the WooSox in June
June was one of the best months in quite some time for Nick Yorke.
After a promotion to Triple-A Worcester to begin the month, Yorke’s bat exceeded all expectations. After carrying an OPS of .691 to start the 2024 season in Portland, Yorke put up a .929 OPS over 20 games for the Worcester Red Sox.
The promotion likely gave the 22-year-old a much-needed boost of confidence after returning to Portland after spending all of 2023 at the Double-A level. Yorke has suited up at second base for 14 games and left field for 6 games. He has not committed an error at either position since being promoted to Worcester.
Red Sox claim 26-year-old right-handed pitcher off waivers from Astros
If you still are unfamiliar with the game of Nick Sogard, start paying attention to Worcester’s box score on a nightly basis.
Sogard is doing something positive just about every single night to help the WooSox win games from both sides of the plate. A switch-hitter, Sogard carries an OPS over .800 as a left-handed batter and as a right-handed batter.
In the month of May, Sogard carried a slash line of .301/.442/.566 over 23 games and in the month of June, Sogard carried a slash line of .329/.414/.494 over 21 games.
The 26-year-old not only does a lot from both sides of the plate, he also has played just about every single position around the diamond for the WooSox. Sogard has played 1 game at first base, 6 games at second base, 34 games at shortstop, 13 games at third base, 6 games in left field, and 9 games in right field.
While Yorke is freshly into his Triple-A tenure, Sogard has played 245 games at the level and is knocking on the doorstep of the major leagues. His ability to switch-hit and defensive versatility should make him a no-brainer MLB bench player that most teams desire around the league. Both Sogard and Yorke are both Rule-5 Draft eligible this offseason, so an add to the 40-man roster might be coming for both in the near future.
