Nick Pivetta leaves workout early, expected to be back Monday (illness)
Red Sox right-hander Nick Pivetta walked off the field today with a trainer following playing catch on the backfields. Pivetta was seen throwing and on his second to last pitch, he leaned over and crouched down and then left towards the Red Sox complex.
The 30-year-old did not return and is not expected to miss much time. According to Chris Cotillo of MassLive, Pivetta has been getting over being sick.
Ian Browne of MLB.com reported that Pivetta is working his way back from COVID-19.
Pivetta is vying for a spot in the rotation after making 33 starts in 2022. He went 10-12 with a 4.56 ERA with one complete game in 179 2/3 innings of work.
Despite being one of the reliable Red Sox starters the last couple of seasons, there’s a chance he could be swingman out of the bullpen, source confirmed on Friday.
The Red Sox are expected to keep Pivetta out of workouts until Monday.
