The 2023 campaign has been full of ups and downs for Nick Pivetta. He began the season in the rotation but was moved to the bullpen after posting a 6.30 ERA in his first eight starts. Over the last few months, he has turned his season around after it looked like his time in a Red Sox uniform was running out. With the Red Sox short on starters, he has started to work his way back into the rotation.
Over the last 12 days, the former fourth-round pick has made three appearances, two of which have been as a starter. On July 31st, he held the Mariners to two runs in 7.1 innings of work while striking out ten. With the Red Sox needing a win on Wednesday night, Pivetta stepped up and held the Royals to two runs in five innings.
After a forgettable May, Pivetta is getting better as the innings pile up. The Canadian native posted a 2.53 ERA in June and followed that up with a 1.91 ERA in July. That is one of the reasons the Red Sox have eased him back into the rotation.
Over his last two starts, Pivetta has allowed five runs in 12.1 innings of work. While that is a small sample size, it is a massive improvement. Even when runners have reached base, the veteran righthander has limited the damage and given Boston a chance to win. That was not the case earlier this year.
As the Red Sox try to secure a playoff spot, Pivetta will be a key piece. He has shown that he can be a Swiss army knife and contribute regardless of the role. If the 30-year-old continues to give the Red Sox quality starts, then his recent run in the rotation could be more than just temporary.
