In his second game with Portland, Northcut smashed his first with them and his 27th of the season.
Prior to his promotion, Northcut was hitting .223/.286/.530 with 13 doubles, 26 homers, 58 RBIs, 43 runs scored, 21 walks, and 118 strikeouts in 77 games (322 plate appearances) with the Greenville Drive this season.
The 23-year-old is currently not regarded as a highly-touted prospect by any of the top publications. However, there is no denying the power potential that Northcut has and has been displaying this season.
SoxProspects lists Northcut as a “Potential bat-first organizational player. Has a long way to go developmentally and needs to show significant improvement to succeed in the high minors. High-risk profile. Biggest strides need to be made at the plate, especially with his approach and bat-to-ball skills.
Needs to learn to use all fields and improve pitch recognition. Will always have swing-and-miss in his game, but will need to keep it at a manageable level in order to tap into his raw power, which is his best tool. Bat profiles better at third base than at first base. Long-term defensive home will depend on how he develops physically and maintains his athleticism.”
