New Red Sox starter Corey Kluber’s contract details
The Red Sox finally added to the starting rotation by signing free agent veteran Corey Kluber on a one-year, $10 million deal. The deal also includes a 2024 club option for $11 million, as first reported by Jeff Passan of ESPN.
Kluber, who’ll turn 37 in April, will pitch for the Red Sox after years of the organization pursuing the veteran. If Kluber sees his 2024 club option exercised, he can max out at $27 million over two seasons.
The two-time Cy Young award winner’s salary includes performance bonuses for games started. He’ll get $500,000 if he starts 20 games, an additional $750,000 if he starts 25 games and $750,000 more if he starts 30 games next season.
If Kluber makes 30 starts he will earn a maximum of $12 million for 2023.
The Birmingham native will earn $11 million in 2024, there is no buyout associated for next season. Kluber’s earnings for 2024 are tied into 2023, for example, if he makes 20 starts in 2023, his 2024 option is now worth $11.5 million.
If he makes 25 starts, his 2024 deal is worth $12.25 million and will escalate to $13 million if he makes 30 starts. WIth the built in bonuses, Kluber can max out at $12 million for 2023 and $15 million for 2024.
Kluber is now added to the mix of Chris Sale, Nick Pivetta, Brayan Bello, Garrett Whitlock, James Paxton and Tanner Houck as options for the rotation. The Red Sox have added Joely Rodriguez, Chris Martin, Kenley Jansen and now Kluber in free agency this winter.
