Nazzan Zanetello reflecting on being drafted by the Red Sox: ’There aren’t a lot of teenagers my age doing what I do’
Nazzan Zanetello is one of the newest members of the Red Sox organization. Boston selected the top prospect in the second round of the 2023 MLB Draft.
After finishing his first few months of professional baseball, Zanetello reflected on his time in the Sox farm system. From taking notes at the draft, at his mother’s request to journaling his first few months in the Sox system, it was important for him to take some time, sit back and reflect on his early career.
“Being in Salem, there was a lot of down time,” said Zanetello. “Looking back on it, just being where I am and constantly doing it every day. It can be easy to get caught up in this is just my life. It's what I do. But in hindsight, I mean, there aren't a lot of 18 year olds doing, what myself doing what a lot of my teammates are doing.
“What a lot of guys in the draft class are doing. So it's definitely humbling looking back on it and kind of just taking a step along with shoes to say, honestly, because I don't feel like I do that enough. I just like I said, it's easy to get caught up and just, this is my life. That's what I do. It's who I am. But there aren't a lot of teenagers my age doing what I do. So it is definitely a great thing to have and be able to do.”
The 6-foot-2, 180 infielder, was drafted out of Christian Brothers College High School in St. Louis. The young teenage prospect has scouts and people in the Red Sox front office raving about his potential. His talent is undeniable, but Nazzan Zanetello as a person is even more special.
“I was already in on the human being, he had some good fibers. But this is where his ability lit me up,” said Red Sox scout Alonzo Wright to Beyond the Monster following the draft. “After that event he earned an invitation to play for Team USA in an event in Mexico, so we scheduled an in-home for 12/1/2022.
“I liked him prior to the in-home, but after the in-home I walked away saying this kid is special. Authentic presence and the part that really got me was how his sister talked about him and looked up to him. You felt love in that household. From there, I was going to see him every chance I for. High school practice, indoor hitting with his teammates, games, you name it. If he is there, I was there.”
