The Jimmy Fund announced on Monday that Red Sox ace Nathan Eovaldi will continue to serve as the Jimmy Fund Captain for the 2022 season. Eovaldi has served in this role since the 2021 season and will continue to support the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
“I am thrilled to continue serving as this year’s Jimmy Fund Captain as it is a role that I am honored to have. I was fortunate to participate in last year’s WEEI/NESN Jimmy Fund Radio-Telethon and met many families who were so inspirational in telling their cancer journeys,” said Eovaldi. “I enjoy sharing the important Jimmy Fund and Dana-Farber mission and look forward to meeting other adult and pediatric patients and helping to raise awareness and funds for a cause that I, and the entire Red Sox organization, hold so close.”
In the past, Mitch Moreland, Brock Holt, Pablo Sandoval, Will Middlebrooks, David Ross, Jarrod Saltamacchia, Daniel Bard, Clay Buchholz and Tim Wakefield have all served as Jimmy Fund Captains.
Over the last few years Brock Holt had a huge presence with the Jimmy Fund. Holt served as a Jimmy Fund Captain for five seasons. Holt undertook fundraising efforts for the Jimmy Fund, for example, he sold t-shirts last year to promote Childhood Cancer Awareness.
The Red Sox partnership with the Jimmy Fund dates back to 1953 when former team owner Tom Yawkey “announced that his team would adopt the Jimmy Fund as its official charity and continue the tradition started by the Braves” after the then-Boston Braves moved to Milwaukee.
Eovaldi will continue in this role through the regular season. The right-handed hurler will become a free agent at the conclusion of the season.
