MLB Notebook: Yankees’ Jasson Domínguez showing off power potential in the bigs, Jackson Holliday promoted to Triple-A, Dodgers' Julio Urías arrested
The Yankees are in last place and limping towards the finish line of the 2023 season. One bright spot for the Bronx Bombers has been the recent promotion of top outfield prospect Jasson Dominguez.
The 20-year-old phenom mashed two homers for the Yankees to lead them to a sweep over the Astros for the first time since 2013.
Domínguez hit his first career homer off future Hall of Famer Justin Verlander. He took the first pitch he saw from Verlander and deposited over the left field wall.
“I knew it was going to be a lot of different feelings, finally stepping on the field and my dream coming true right in front of me,” Domínguez said through an interpreter. “I was able to connect there for that hit, and it ended up being a homer. It’s probably the best game that I’ve been part of in my career.”
“The Martian” didn’t waste time mashing his second career blast in Space City, homering on Sunday night, powering the Yankees past the Astros, 6-1 in a rare sweep.
Domínguez has his sights set on Tuesday night, when he makes his debut at Yankees Stadium.
“I think it’s going to be big time,” Domínguez said. “I think it’s going to be awesome.”
Fast riser Jackson Holliday promoted to Triple-A Norfolk
Orioles top prospect Jackson Holliday is one step closer to the majors after being promoted to the Norfolk Tides.
Baltimore will promoted Holliday to their Triple-A affiliate, meaning he has risen through four ranks of the system in 2023.
The 19-year-old started out the year in the Low-A Carolina League before rising through the system. In 107 games, Holliday has slashed .333/.451/.517 with 45 extra-base hits, 85 walks, and 23 stolen bases.
The 2022 first overall selection was red hot for Double-A Bowie hitting .326 with a .913 on-base-plus percentage.
Holliday, who is the son of former big league slugger Matt Holliday is just one of many top prospects within the Orioles system. He is one step away from joining the likes of Gunner Henderson, Adley Rutschman, Grayson Rodriguez, and Jordan Westburg in Baltimore.
In an interview with The Banner’s Jon Meoli, Holliday said he thinks “I would be able to definitely hold my own” if he was called up to the majors right now. “I don’t know how a lot of people would trust me as a 19-year-old,” he added.
“I think there’s a lot of guys that probably deserve it a little bit more, like Joey [Ortiz], who has been killing it all year, and Heston [Kjerstad], who has shown he can hit any pitcher that steps on the mound,” Holliday continued. “It would be quite a blessing to be able to get called up and be able to experience that.”
