MLB Insider on which Red Sox player could benefit from a change of scenery at the trade deadline
The Major League Baseball season is now into the month of June, and the Red Sox are still a .500 at 32-32. Boston has exceeded some expectations through 64 games with the slew of injuries that have impacted them both on the pitching front and in the lineup.
The Red Sox are hovering at .500 and are 1.5 games out of the final Wild Card spot. It’s likely Boston will make a few moves by adding and subtracting from the roster.
According to a recent article from MLB.com insider Mark Feinsand, Bobby Dalbec could benefit from a change of scenery at the trade deadline.
“Dalbec has a good glove at first base, but his bat hasn’t translated since his initial big league success,” wrote Feinsand. “With no obvious future in Boston as he approaches the arbitration process for the first time, he could be a roll-of-the-dice reclamation project for another club.”
The 28-year-old is currently with the Red Sox due to the injury bug impacting the roster. Through 27 games, Dalbec is hitting .150 (9-for-60) with two doubles, no homers, six RBI, five walks, and 31 strikeouts. He’s also spent 26 games with the WooSox this season, hitting .245 with eight homers and 21 RBI.
Dalbec has been the subject of the subject of speculation of trade rumors for the last couple of years, but based on his offensive production at the big league level, his value has plummeted.
The Red Sox have a need for Dalbec right now due to his versatility while guys are on the injured list. Trading Dalbec in season for the sake of giving him a change of scenery makes little sense.
Dalbec offers a viable option off the bench to play first base, third base, and right field in the short term. Unless Dalbec is involved in a bigger deal, and a better bench option is added to the roster, trading him to give him a fresh start is not what’s best for the Red Sox roster right now.
