MLB Insider on whether Eduardo Rodriguez is on the radar for the Red Sox; 'One phone call can change everything'
The Red Sox may not be planning a reunion with free agent left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez, according to FanSided’s Robert Murray.
While on the MLB Insiders YouTube show, Murray was asked what pitchers the Red Sox are expressing interest in ahead of the Winter Meetings.
“It just seems like they're another team that's just firmly in the starting pitching market,” said Murray.
“I don't necessarily have names for you as of this point. I don't think as of right now, I don't think E-Rod is as a strong possibility there. Things could change. But I don't think it's I don't think E-Rod is gonna end up in Boston. But I, again, I just want to preface before the aggregators get a hold of that. One phone call can change everything. But as of right now, I just don't see that happening.”
Boston is searching for top of the rotation type starters this offseason. Rodriguez is a logical candidate to return to the Red Sox given his time spent with the organization.
Rodriguez spent the last two seasons with the Tigers before opting out of his contract at the end of the season. This past year, the southpaw posted a 3.30 ERA with 48 walks and 143 strikeouts over 152 2/3 frames (26 starts).
The Venezuelan native signed a five-year, $77 million deal with Detroit following the 2021 season. The deal included an opt-out clause and a 10-team no-trade clause.
At the trade deadline, Rodriguez invoked his no-trade rights after the Tigers and Dodgers agreed to a deal for the lefty. The deal would have netted Detroit prospects and given the Dodgers a much needed starter for their playoff push.
