Mitch Moreland reunion in Boston?
Moreland spent four seasons with the Red Sox until he was traded back in 2020
The Red Sox have gotten no production from their first baseman this season. Bobby Dalbec has been a disaster at the plate, Travis Shaw has been released and Franchy Cordero is getting a second chance.
At some point Chaim Bloom needs to either call up prized prospect Triston Casas or make a move to bring someone else into the organization.
Could the Red Sox look at a reunion with former first baseman Mitch Moreland? The 36-year-old is currently a free agent having last played with the Athletics last season.
During his time with the Red Sox, Moreland quickly became a fan favorite. Fans have been clamoring for his return to the club since he was traded back in 2020.
Moreland recently met with WEEI’s Rob Bradford and was asked if the Red Sox have reached out to him about a potential reunion?
"I didn't know. You can't ever tell with guys' plans. You can look at it and say there is a fit here or there. But obviously, every team has its plans and their ideas. I love that place. It's my favorite place I have played. I'm pretty sure everybody knows that. It was definitely an unbelievable experience being part of the Red Sox organization and the culture and the fan base. Winning a World Series there is something that is a highlight of my career so far. Nothing but respect for those guys. Sure, I would have loved to be there and had an opportunity again. But, like I said, it's not my plans that matter. They're the ones who make those decisions."
Moreland told Bradford that his phone hasn’t rung yet about a return to the majors.
Moreland enjoyed success with the Red Sox during his four years with the club. He was part of the 2018 World Series championship team. The veteran left-hander hit a big home run during that World Series against the Dodgers.
Moreland hit .251 with 64 home runs while driving in 226 RBIs and collecting 78 doubles. His ability to hit doubles in the clutch earned him the nickname “Mitchy Two Bags” from Jared Carrabis.
