With the start of the 2025 campaign less than a week away, the Red Sox will soon pack up their things at Fort Myers. The last month has provided plenty of optimism due to a revamped lineup and starting rotation. Fans also got a preview of what the future holds with promising prospects such as Mikey Romero.
During spring training Romero was a human highlight reel. The former first-round pick has posted a .667 batting average in six at-bats and driven in two runs. He has also shown a little power with two extra-base hits. As Romero has impressed every time he steps in the box, Red Sox manager Alex Cora has taken notice.
“Mikey Romero, the last three, four days,” Cora quickly said earlier this month. “He’s a good player, a really good player. Good at-bats, good defender. Mikey Romero is a good player. We just got to get him healthy. He did everything this offseason to put himself in good shape. He’s a lot stronger now. This is the first time I’ve had a look consistently and I like him as a player. … Good instincts, really good instincts.”
While it is only a small sample size, Romero made the most of every at-bat. He has hit the ball with authority and showed what he can do when healthy. The key for Romero will be carrying that success into the regular season.
Between three levels last year, the 21-year-old posted a .271 batting average and drove in 53 runs. Romero also set career-highs in home runs with 16 and doubles with 24. After battling injuries his first few years in the minors, Romero should he can be an impact player. That has translated to spring training.
Due to his play, Romero will be closely watched during the 2025 campaign. He has thrived in the whenever given the opportunity. At the Futures at Fenway South event, he dazzled scouts with a two-run homer to dead center. His ability to excel in high-pressure situations has caused more excitement about his future.
While the Red Sox organization is full of talent, Romero is starting to stand out more than ever.
