So far this season, Red Sox prospects such as Blaze Jordan, Roman Anthony, and Marcelo Mayer have dominated headlines. The trio is a key piece of the Red Sox’s future; however, they are not the only prospects impressing scouts. After beginning the season on the injured list, Mikey Romero has been on fire at the plate and has shown why he was a first-round pick.
In 18 games this season, between Rookie Ball and Single-A, the San Diego native has posted a .289 batting average and driven in six runs. So far in July, Romero has three multi-hit games and is showing a great approach at the plate. Through 30 at-bats, he has drawn four walks.
While Romero has impressed with his offense, his success comes as no surprise. He had some of the best bat-to-ball skills in the 2022 prep class. His biggest question mark was his power. However, Romero is already showing improvement in that department. In 32 games in the minors, 14 of his 37 hits have gone for extra bases.
Although Romero is making headlines with his offense, he has also been solid in the field. The 19-year-old has only committed one error this season and turned five double plays. While Romero’s sample size has been small, he is making the most of his opportunities which is an encouraging sign considering his high expectations.
The former 24th overall pick is currently ranked No.6 on the Red Sox’s top 30 prospect list by MLB.Com. Over the last few weeks, he has shown why and has been an on-base machine. Since making his professional debut last year, Romero has posted a .298 batting average in 124 at-bats.
As the regular season continues, Romero will be a player to watch. He has been on fire at the plate in July and is making an impact on a nightly basis for Salem. While the start of his 2023 campaign was delayed due to injuries, he is making up for lost time now that he is fully healthy.
