Mets top prospect Brett Baty: 'I feel like if I get the barrel to the ball no matter where the pitch is, I feel like good things are going to happen'
The Syracuse Mets exploded for 16 runs and five homers on Saturday in a 16-6 rout of the Worcester Red Sox. The Mets offense was led by third base prospect Brett Baty, who went 4-for-5 with two homers, including a grand slam and drove in 5 RBIs.
Baty hit his first home run of the season in the top of the first off WooSox lefty Brandon Walter. The 23-year-old took a 1-2 slider deep 419-feet over the center field wall.
“I just got it up on the air in the jet stream and the ball went out,” said Baty to Beyond the Monster before the game.
Walter only faced Baty once in the game but his performance for the Mets did not go unnoticed by the left-hander.
“He looked like Barry Bonds today. He’s obviously a great player, I’ve played against him a couple of different years at different levels. He’s a guy if you make mistakes he’s going to crush them.
“He took me deep on a slider, that’s my best pitch and he hit it. It wasn’t my best slider but it wasn’t terrible. He was able to put a bat on it and get it up in the air and it traveled. We didn’t do ourselves favors but he took advantage of every mistake we made, he’s a good player,” said Walter following the loss on Saturday.
One of those mistakes that Walter referred to was the grand slam that Baty hit in the top of the sixth inning. Baty’s homer came off a 97-mph fastball from WooSox lefty Cam Booser, that he mashed 413-feet deep over the left field wall under the big scoreboard.
“I’m just trying to go up there and stay within myself, I feel like if I get the barrel to the ball no matter where the pitch is, I feel like good things are going to happen,” said Baty.
Baty has spent three years in the Mets minor league system, hitting 38 home runs, 149 RBIs, .289 batting average, and .390 on-base percentage.
