With the Bruins enjoying a much-needed holiday break, Matthew Poitras is staying busy. The Bruins forward is currently playing for Team Canada in the 2024 IFH World Junior Championship. On Tuesday morning, he ended his scoring drought and helped the Canadiens get in the win column.
In Team Canada’s 5-2 victory over Finland on Tuesday morning, Poitras made it a 4-2 game with an empty net goal with less than three minutes left. The goal was Poitras’ first point of the tournament and showed why he is a threat with the puck on his stick.
Leading up to the goal, the alternate captain for Team Canada dragged his left skate along the blue line while waiting on a pass from Connor Geekie before finding the back of the net. While Poitras success comes as no surprise Bruins fans had plenty to celebrate. Connor is the brother of current Bruin Morgan Geekie.
Team Canada’s next game is set for Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. against Latvia. Poitras will not be the only reason for Bruins to tune in, as he will be taking on fellow Bruins prospect Dans Locmelis.
Although Boston will be without Poitras for a few weeks, the tournament represents a perfect opportunity for him to get back on track. In his first NHL season, the talented 19-year-old has appeared in 27 games and recorded 13 points. However, he has struggled lately and is regaining his confidence while fulfilling a lifelong goal.
