During the 2022 season, the bullpen has been anything but reliable for the Red Sox. While it has undergone dramatic change, one pitcher who has surpassed expectations is Matt Strahm. The West Fargo native is in his first year with the Red Sox and having one of the best seasons of his career.
Through 45 appearances this season, Strahm has posted a 2.95 ERA and struck out 47 batters. In his seventh big league season, the thirty-year-old has only allowed three home runs and played various roles. After entering the season with zero career saves, he has converted four of his seven opportunities in Boston.
Additionally, hitters have struggled to get on base against the right-hander. Opponents are hitting .208 against Strahm this season, and he has been nearly unhittable over the last two months. In his last three outings, the former Padre has not allowed a hit while striking out six batters. With free agency only months away, Strahm is ending the season on a high note now that he is healthy.
While Strahm has spent some time on the injured list season, he has provided a reminder of his importance over the last two months. He has allowed two earned runs and struck out 15 batters in his last 12 appearances. In that span, Strahm has surrendered one home run. He has also continued to be a trusted option in high-leverage situations as the Red Sox have fallen out of contention.
Although the talented reliever is set to be a free agent, a return is not out of the question. He has thrived with the Red Sox and is only one appearance short of tying his career high. That comes a year after he only appeared in six games. While the Red Sox will have plenty of competition, Strahm has shown that he will not be easy to replace.
Regardless of what happens in free agency, Strahm has been a bright spot for a Red Sox team that has not met expectations. The former 21st-round pick has added 12 holds to his resume surpassing his previous career high of seven. Due to his performance this year, Strahm will be a popular option for teams looking for bullpen help in 2023.
