Marlins prospect Deyvison De Los Santos is making a compelling case for a promotion
On a Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp team full of talent, there is plenty to be excited about regarding the Marlins' future. So far this season, the Marlins have already turned to their Triple-A affiliate for help multiple times. However, one player making a compelling case for a promotion is Deyvison De Los Santos.
In 20 games for the Jumbo Shrimp this season, De Los Santos has posted a .311 batting average and driven in nine runs. The talented 21-year-old has also shown some power with six extra-base hits, including four home runs. Regardless of who is on the mound, the Dominican native has found a way to get on base and has been a spark plug for the offense.
While the season is just a few weeks old, De Los Santos has shown that he can make adjustments. In his first taste of Triple-A action last year, the Jumbo Shrimp infielder hit .240 in 50 games. Since opening day, he has been hard to keep off the base paths and has not had to use his power to make an impact.Â
As De Los Santos has made headlines with his bat, he has been solid in the field. He only committed two errors while splitting time between first and third this season. The talented Marlins prospect has also added 83 putouts and turned five double plays. He is making the most of his opportunities after battling for a spot in the majors during spring training.Â
The last few weeks have been a continuation of what De Los Santos has done at every level. Through 458 games in the minors, he has posted a .288 batting average and driven in 333 runs. Due to his play, De Los Santos has little to prove in Triple-A.
If De Los Santos can build on his hot start, it will be hard for the Marlins to keep him in Jacksonville. Miami has been more competitive than expected this season, partly due to an influx of young talent. De Los Santos hopes to be the next prospect to join a Marlins core, with an incredibly bright future.
