Mark Contreras quietly becoming a menace on the base paths for the WooSox
The WooSox have had two speedsters on their roster this season: outfielder Corey Rosier and infielder David Hamilton. However, outfielder Mark Contreras has been quietly becoming the team’s stolen base king.
Contreras owns seven stolen bases to begin the season, which is good for second in the International League. His ability to swipe bags has been partly due to Contreras working eight walks over his first 25 at-bats.
The WooSox outfielder has been known for his speed while in the Twins organization, swiping 93 bases in 126 chances.
While playing for the St. Paul Saints, he stole a career high 23 stolen bases in back-to-back seasons (2022-2023).
Contreras signed with Boston back in November, offering average power at the plate. He’s been known as a gap hitter during his career, with some pop in his bat.
The highlight of Contreras's game is his speed and versatility on defense. The former UC Riverside product, plays all three outfield spots and has an above-average to plus arm, according to SoxProspects. Contreras does own an MiLB Rawlings Gold Glove, which he won back in 2019.
The 28-year-old made his big-league debut last May, playing in 28 games for the Twins, posting a .121 batting average (7-for-58) with one double, three homers, six RBIs, nine runs scored, one stolen base, a walk, and 21 strikeouts.
