Marcelo Mayer shows patience in an impressive first Spring Training at-bat
Mayer shared his first Spring Training game experience with Nick Yorke
Fans got to take a look at Red Sox No. 1 prospect Marcelo Mayer during Thursday night’s game against the Orioles.
The 19-year-old shortstop came in as a defensive replacement and had his first spring training at-bat in the seventh inning. Mayer showed discipline at the dish working a six-pitch walk. While walks aren’t the most exciting highlights to see, Mayer showing patience at the plate at such a young age was impressive to see.
Mayer is one of the most intriguing prospects in baseball ranked as the No.1 prospect in the Red Sox system according to Baseball America. The former fourth overall draft pick in the 2021 MLB Draft called his first spring game “special.”
Mayer was able to experience his first spring game with fellow first round pick and prospect Nick Yorke. The Red Sox 2021 Minor League Offensive Player of the Year entered the game in the sixth inning as a pinch hitter. Yorke would finish the game 0-for-2 with a walk.
“I just love to play baseball,” Yorke said to The Boston Globe’s Julian McWilliams. “It’s just my passion. I love to do it. I’m just having a good time playing every day.”

Hey fellas, This is a great substack! Really happy to be subscribed on here and have followed the twitter handles. Back in the day I started The Pennant for Red Sox news and it was tough to keep up with. Really glad to have good red sox news on Substack. I recently created a casual one called the Jersey Street Tribune - a weekly newsletter of condensed baseball that keeps red sox fans up to speed. jerseysttribune.substack.com. I will reference some of your posts in my nuanced takes.
