Marcelo Mayer makes spring debut, hits a double in tie versus the Yankees
Red Sox top prospect Marcelo Mayer made his 2023 spring training debut on Sunday. He would also collect his first hit, a double into the left field gap.
Mayer’s double came in the ninth inning, on a 3-2 count off Yankees reliever Albert Abreu. He would finish the day 1-for-2 at the plate, after coming in as a defensive replacement in the sixth inning for shortstop Christian Koss.
“A little bit of pregame jitters just because I haven’t played in front of people in like five months so it was cool,” Mayer said afterward. “A little bit different than (playing on) the back fields.”
Mayer’s hit, which came at the expense of the Yankees was bittersweet for the 20-year-old.
“(It) made it that much more exciting to be out on the field,” he said following the game to The Athletic.
The former fourth overall pick in the 2021 MLB Draft played in four spring training games last season. Mayer went hitless, 0-for-4 with a walk and two strikeouts.
