When the Red Sox drafted Marcelo Mayer they knew they were getting a special player. On Sunday, someone landed a very special Bowman Mayer card by dropping $132,000 at the Goldin Auctions.
The one-of-a-kind, autographed 2021 Bowman Draft baseball card was the second one featuring baseball’s brightest stars to be sold. Last month, Yankees prospect Jasson Dominguez 2020 Bowman card went for almost $500,000.
The 2021 Bowman Chrome Draft Picks Autographs Superfractor signed card was rated PSA Mint 9, PSA/DNA 10. The limited edition card is serial-numbered 1/1 which garnered the huge asking price at auction.
Mayer’s card was initially listed at $10,000, but the price escalated quickly as the auction was set to close.
In his first professional season, he played 26 games hitting .275 with three homers and he drove in 17 RBIs. MLB Pipeline lists Mayer as the No. 9 prospect in baseball and the No. 1 for the Red Sox.
The young shortstop has huge upside in the field and he’s left-handed swing is getting better at the plate. In addition, he is adding weight to his body frame, weighing 190 pounds when the Sox drafted him. He is now up to 202 pounds as he arrives to Spring Training in Fort Myers.
Mayer will continue to drum up interest while he develops within the Red Sox system. He will also see more of his cards go for high prices in future auctions.
