The New York Mets and right handed starter Luis Severino have reportedly agreed to a one-year, $13 million deal. The deal was first reported by Mark Feinsand of MLB Network.
Severino is looking to bounce back after a forgettable 2023. The 29-year-old battled a lat and oblique strain on seperate occasions.
He pitched to a 6.65 ERA, 1.65 WHIP and 79/34 K/BB ratio across 89 1/3 innings (19 appearances, 18 starts).
The appeal of Severino is the potential he had shown in 2017 and 2018. He made back-to-back All-Star appearances when he made 31 and 32 starts respectively.
Between those 63 combined outings he went 33-14 with a 3.18 ERA/3.01 FIP for the Yankees. Unfortunately, injuries have continued to plague Severino. He missed time due to Tommy John surgery that cost him all of 2020 and most of 2021 before returning late that season in September.
The Mets have been linked to many big name free agents including starters such as Yoshinobu Yamamoto. With the high spending reputation of their owner Steve Cohen, it is a safe bet that they will continue to look for ways to upgrade their rotation.
“The Mets have been active on the starting pitching market. They’re not done, they might not even be done in the short-term,” said SNY’s Andy Martino.
Currently, Severino joins a rotation that is lead by Kodai Senga and Jose Quintana. As of now, the newcomer would be projected to slide in as their number three starter.
