Luis Perales has a bright future
Over the last year, Red Sox prospect Luis Perales has seen his value rise. The Venezuelan native is currently ranked as the Red Sox’s 24-best prospect after just two years in the system. While he is only 19 years old, he is one player that could be a difference maker for Boston in the future.
In 14 minor league games, Perales has posted a 1.91 ERA and held opponents to a .162 batting average. He has struck out 53 batters in that span and only walked 21. Although his sample size is small, Perales has shown that he has dominating stuff in the lower levels.
Entering the 2023 campaign, Perales projects to be a top of the rotation starter in the majors. He has three above-average pitches and has proven to be a strikeout machine. As the talented righty continues to develop, he will need to show he can handle a starter's workload. In 2022 Perales was limited to three innings an outing due to injuries he dealt with the year before.
Additionally, during the 2022 campaign, Perales quickly added to his resume. The former international free agent was named the FCL Pitcher of the Month last August. During that same month, he earned Pitcher of the Week honors for the week of August 17.
When games do resume, Perales will get the opportunity to build on his success against advanced competition. His arsenal includes a fastball that tops out at 99 miles per hour and a curveball that scouts say is advanced for a player his age. That is a formula that could prove to be successful at the big league level.
With his major league debut still a couple of years away, Perales is far from a finished prospect. He will be challenged as he moves through the system, which will determine what his ceiling truly is. However, with two seasons in the books, the excitement over his future has already started to build.
