On Tuesday night, Pirates fans got a glimpse of the future. Prospect Luis Ortiz was called up and started game two of the doubleheader between the Pirates and Reds. The 23-year-old, who has seen his stock rise this season, fooled Reds hitters all afternoon and looked like he belonged in the majors.
In 5.2 innings of work, Ortiz held Cincinnati scoreless and only allowed one hit. He also struck out five batters and was in control all afternoon. The Pirates 30th ranked prospect lit up the radar gun on a consistent basis while averaging 99 miles per hour. As Pittsburgh was able to secure a doubleheader sweep, Ortiz played a key role.
Although Ortiz was optioned to the minors after just one start, he showcased his potential. The Dominican native has a 4.56 ERA this season in 26 outings between Double-A and Triple-A. While those numbers may not jump off the page, he has 138 strikeouts between the two levels. At Triple-A, he has only allowed four runs in two starts.
For Ortiz, this week has been one that will be hard to forget. On top of making his MLB debut, he was named the International League Pitcher of the Week at Triple-A after throwing six no-hit innings on September eighth. He also did something no other Pirates starter has accomplished in seven years.
In the first inning, Ortiz threw a 100.4 mph fastball to Donovan Solano. It was the fastest pitch through by a Pirates pitcher since Gerrit Cole in 2015. Although his velocity stood out, Ortiz also used his slider to keep Cincinnati hitters off balance. Of the 16 times Reds hitters swung at that pitch, they missed it eight times.
While it is unknown if Ortiz will make another appearance in the majors this season, his first start could not have gone any better. The few times batters did reach, he kept his composure and gave the Pirates a chance to win. Ortiz should get more opportunities next year as his return to the majors will be highly anticipated.
